Evie Lovelle Gallery and Shoot – Hollywood Glamour Photography

How to Make Hollywood Portraits

After about a month of battling the Flu and a back issue, I am finally getting this gallery and post up regarding the Evie Lovelle Shoot. The day I shot Evie I was actually coming down with the flu, and for the following two weeks had the flu and then back issues, from popping a rib out of place from all the sneezing I did.  Not Fun.

Anyway so Evie can over and we talked and went over some ideas for the shoot and discussed the order in which we were going to do the outfits she brought. I had her get into the first outfit and then did a quick video interview which is going to be on PinupoftheMonth.com, but I included a video here of us shooting and my messing with the lighting. The equipment list for this shoot is as follows, no strobes were used at all, only Fresnel.

Equipment list as far as lighting:

2 – 500 Watt Fresnel Lamps for kickers similar to these

2 – 300 Watt Altman Fresnel Lamps for Key and Fill Light

2 – 200 Watt Mole – Richardson Midget Fresnel Lamps for Side and Background Light

My Background Setup or one of them is the Manfroto AutoPole System by Bogen Imaging

In a previous post I included a video of Evie dancing to give people an idea of what a burlesque dancer does. Burlesque can be left up to some interpretation, but her dance is a classic style and with classic outfits. The video I included is here.

The video of Evie Lovelle and I working together is first, then the gallery of the shoot.

And here’s the gallery…Enjoy!

  1. When I was younger (about 30 years ago) I wanted to be a photographer. I purchased all the equipment – Cannon SLR, darkroom equipment, books, magazines. I really enjoyed taking photos and developing them myself. I was an enthusiastic amateur.

But the passion fizzled out. I don’t remember why.

    Your photos are amazing, beautiful.

  2. Evie has such a tiny waist! What a treat to see how the different vintage cameras work. The red dress is gorgeous! What a delight to watch you work. I’m your biggest fan, Darkman. Gee, you’re swell!

Thank you for a very interesting post… it’s funny how you don’t know how little you know about something until you hear a professional speaking about it.

Does all the stuff about lighting matter if you’re just taking the pictures with your cell phone?… 🙂

Although I doubt I’ll take up the serious pursuit of photography… it has always been interesting to me how easy it is to manipulate perception with lighting, color, perspective, etc. It kind of gives you a little deeper insight into how you see things in daily life!

    keep smiling,

  5. What a tiny waist! But she does look so glamorous and the lighting used on her is excellent. I especially liked the 9th photo.

  6. I always wanted to do A Hollywood Glamour Shoot. She looks so pretty and you have great pictures! Thanks for sharing the video. It’s awesome! I love it!

  7. She looks so pretty and she kinda looks like Dita von Teese. I love how the pictures look so classic and elegant.

  8. Hi Darkman,

I took a Hollywood Glamour photography class about two years ago and fell in love with the style. Since then I have been studying the genre at great length and 2 days ago I bought my first set of hot lights!

    (2) X 650W Fresnel Tungsten Light With Globes
    (2) X 300W Fresnel Tungsten Light With Globes
    (4) x Air Cushioned Stands
    (4) x Dimmers

I also bought a set of gobos for that classic cukaloris effect.

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for your generosity and for sharing your techniques and your studio with us. It is an inspiration and a relief that I can pull off this kind of art without needing a big studio. I love that you are doing many of the same things we did in class and that you use the same vocabulary. Clearly, you are able to do this kind of work and do it beautifully. I found your portfolio impressive. I wish I had known about you when I was taking the class, I would have shared this site with the other students. I will come back often to see what you have been up to. THANK YOU for your expertise and for running a robust website with a lot of relevant content.

My lights arrive in a few weeks. Wish me luck!
